A little insight

When I first started working on my master's degree I wanted to specialize in archives, I love to see what people's lives were like on a daily basis. I want to know what they were thinking, how they saw the world around them and how they felt.  Here is a web site full of photographs that do just that -   http://www.shorpy.com/

Here's a few of my favorites:

Mina Turner and her cousin Elizabeth in Waban, Massachusetts. 1910.

"June 30, 1922. Washington policeman Bill Norton measuring the distance between knee and suit at the Tidal Basin bathing beach after Col. Sherrell, Superintendent of Public Buildings and Grounds, issued an order that suits not be over six inches above the knee."

July 1939. "Grandson of Negro tenant farmer" Granville County, North Carolina.

New York circa 1901. "Evelyn Nesbit, age 16, brought to the studio by Stanford White." A chorus girl turned artists' model, Evelyn Nesbit was at the center of a huge scandal in 1906 when her husband killed her former lover, the architect Stanford White.

"October 1941. The main-concourse information desk at Grand Central Terminal in New York. "

A woman and her dog in the Harlem section. May 1943.

"July 1942. Woman and her daughter in Washington, D.C."

"April 1917. Daily inspection of teeth and fingernails. Older pupils make the inspection under the direction of teacher who records results. This has been done every day this year. School #49, Comanche County, Oklahoma "

"Miss Marjorie Joesting, August 2, 1926." Miss Washington, D.C., who was runner-up at the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City.

December 1941. Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. "Main street on Sunday."

"Preston DeCosta, 15 years old. Messenger #3 for Bellevue Messenger Service in San Antonio, Texas. October 1913. I ran across him while he was carrying notes back and forth between a prostitute in jail and a pimp in the Red Light. He had read all the notes and knew all about them. "

There are hundreds more at http://www.shorpy.com/. I'm totally addicted to this site!
